Tips for Renter-Friendly Home Improvements

There is a common misconception that if you rent your home, you’re not able to make any significant changes or updates to it. Nothing could be further from the truth! There are a ton of renter-friendly changes you can make in your home to personalize your home and make it a space you love. Whether it’s removable wallpaper, decor made for rental spaces, or custom window treatments, there are a multitude of options available to make your rental home match your unique vibe.

Dress up your walls

Removable wallpaper, also known as renter’s wallpaper, is an excellent way to imbibe your rental home with some personality! These wallpapers are designed to be simple to install and remove without causing damage, so you can put up as much as you want without worry you’ll be charged when you move out! We love brands like Wallbrush or Spoonflower. Chasing Paper is another excellent choice, and was even recommended by the New York Times as one of the best removable wallpaper options in 2023!

Shed some light on the subject

Contrary to popular opinion, you are NOT stuck with the boring stock lighting you’ll find in most apartments and rental homes. While we don’t recommend adding or removing any hard-wired light fixtures, you can easily individualize your space with plug-in chandeliers! These won’t require any work from an electrician, and can be easily placed with just a couple tools. Companies like CB2, Arhaus, and even Amazon have some great options for chic, unique lighting for affordable prices.

Make privacy elegant with motorized roller shades

The basic options most rental properties offer for window coverings and privacy are…well, basic. And we can do better than that! Adding your own window coverings is a simple and renter-friendly way to improve your space and give you more control over the natural light and privacy in your home. Splurge for a motorized option (we love these!) to add a touch of sophistication, and don’t forget to include drapery for a more luxurious feel.

Use renter-friendly decor options

Having a gallery wall in your home is a great way to personalize your space and display memories that make you smile, but putting a bunch of holes in the walls that you’ll have to fill and cover before you leave is just not the move. Instead of either damaging your walls or NOT having any decor on them, look into options for creating unique gallery walls without damaging any surfaces! Mixtiles was invented for exactly this purpose, and boasts a number of options for adding your own photos or even cool member-produced artwork to your home! You can change things up and rearrange the tiles as often as you like without worrying about ripping off paint or wallpaper.

Add texture and warmth from the floor

Area rugs are an excellent way to quickly add some depth to your space without doing anything permanent. Plush rugs are always great to sink your toes into when you step out of bed in the morning, but in higher-traffic areas like living rooms or hallways, the convenience of washable rugs simply cannot be beat. Ruggable has some excellent options, as does Revival Rugs.

As you can see, making your rental home reflect your personality and taste doesn’t have to be complicated or prohibitively expensive. With just a few simple changes, you can make your rented house or apartment look like it was built just for you!
